How to Prepare for a New Session of Nursing School!
I am a nursing student in an accelerated BSN program that runs year-round, so we are preparing to begin a new session every eight weeks. While everyone has their own method of setting themselves up for success, I believe I have found a way that works well for me! Since we don’t get many extended breaks throughout our program, I find it extremely important to take those few days to find a balance between resting, rejuvenating, and doing some light work for the upcoming classes.
Starting a new class can be nerve-wracking, and being organized is one way I can walk in feeling confident. One of the first things that I do is pull out the syllabus and study it. It is important to glance at what the workload will entail for the session and understand what your schedule will entail. After studying the syllabus, I then fill out my planner. My favorite planner to use is the Student Nurse Planner 2.0. The planner is of great quality and includes numerous helpful cheat sheets and different layouts to facilitate your needs. When filling out the planner, I try to use different color pens/highlighters for each of the classes to visualize my planner with ease. I also use a box system to check off an assignment when completed and, finally, cross it out once submitted. This is a great way to ensure that no assignments are overlooked and that everything is completed promptly.
Once my planner is filled out for the session, I begin to look at any assignments or readings completed by the first day of class. In some sessions, I try to complete as many pre-work assignments as possible, while in others, I take a few days to myself before hitting the books. An essential part of preparing for a new session is acknowledging what is best for your mind and body and giving it what it needs. If you feel that you should take a few days off before jumping to the start of a new session, that is great! A mental break can be just what is needed to start a new class with the focus and determination needed to do well in nursing school. Part of being able to take care of others effectively is to remember to take care of yourself first.

AMAZING POST. i cant stress enough how writing down my schedule is the only way I can actually reflect and feel good about taking a break. when you see your entire schedule in front of you- you can feel less anxiety knowing its in one place. love this. the nursing world is so lucky to have gained you!
